How to measure for made-to-measure curtains
Step 1: Measure the width
- For poles - measure the width between the decorative finials
- For tracks - measure the full width of the track
- For overlapping tracks - measure the full width of both tracks and add them together
We will then select just the right amount of fabric for optimum fullness. This is generally double fullness - ie the total width of the curtain fabric will be twice the width measurement provided.
Step 2: Measure the drop
For poles - for Pinch Pleat and Pencil Pleat curtains, measure from the bottom of the curtain ring to the desired drop. For Eyelets, measure from the top of the pole to the desired drop. Then add 4cm (1 1/2 inches) to allow for the fabric that sits above the pole.
For tracks - measure from the top of the track to ensure the curtain fabric will hide the track.
What drop length is right for me?
Curtains lengths tend to be one of three - to the floor, below the sill or level with the sill. The length that you choose depends upon the look you want to create plus other factors such as the positioning of radiators.
For curtains to the floor, measure to one centimetre above the floor. This will ensure the curtain doesn't drag.
For curtain below the sill measure 15cm to 20cm (6 to 8 inches) below the sill. However if you are choosing this length to avoid a radiator please adjust this measurement to allow the curtains to stop a couple of centimetres above the radiator.
For curtains to the sill (for example if you want your curtains to fit in the recess of your bay window), measure to one centimetre above the sill. This will ensure the curtain doesn't drag.
How to measure for ready-made curtains
Follow steps 1 to 2 from the 'how to measure for made-to-measure curtains' instructions. Please note, Pinch Pleat is not a heading option for ready-made curtains.
Step 3: Choose the right size ready-made curtains for you
Width
Ready-made curtains come in pairs. There are three width options to choose from; the width of each curtain in the pair is 117cm, 168cm or 229cm.
To achieve the best effect at your window, you need the total width of your pair of curtains to be approximately one and a half to twice the width of your curtain track or pole. Generally speaking, more fabric is better as your curtains will appear fuller and more luxurious.
So for tracks or poles up to 140cm (55 inches) choose the 117cm width (46 inches)
For tracks or poles between 141cm (55 inches) and 198cm (78 inches) choose the 168cm width (66 inches)
For tracks or poles between 199cm (78 inches) and 274cm (107inches) choose the 229cm width (90 inches)
Drop
Choose from three drops - 137cm (54 inches), 183cm (72 inches) or 229cm (90 inches). Choose the best drop to suit your measurement. Be careful not to choose a drop length that is too long, even if it is the closest to your actual measurements, as you may end up with your curtains dragging on the sill or floor. Alternatively, consider raising or lowering your curtain pole slightly to achieve a better fit.

handy hints
If you're fitting a new pole or track, we recommend the following:
The pole or track should extend at least 15cm (6 inches) either side of the window giving space for the fabric of the curtain to hang when it is pulled back during the day.
If possible it should also be positioned 12cm to 15cm (5 to 6 inches) above the window recess to stop light shining over the top of the curtains.
